Ear Nursing
Close up of an ear

Gentle ear care, from someone who listens.

Microsuction and ear health with Emma Pere, Registered Nurse.

Kia ora

My name's Emma, mum, owner and registered nurse specialising in ear health.

We've been servicing ear health in the Gisborne and Whakatāne community since 2020, and now hold clinics in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa too.

Whether it's simple ear wax removal or a foreign object, we've got the experience to help you get hearing clearly again.

Over ten years in ears has given us close ties with GPs, local health providers and Bay Audiology, and we work with local trusts to reach rural communities too.

What people tell us most
"The most gentle microsuction I've ever had."

We hear it again and again, and then they bring their mum, their kids, their koro.

Clearer hearing, gently

Every appointment starts with a proper look and a chat, so you know what's going on before anything happens.

Ear health check

A careful look inside both ears and a clear explanation of what I can see.

Microsuction

Gentle wax removal with a tiny suction tip. No water, no syringing.

Home visits

When getting to a clinic is hard, I can come to you.

Is it time for an ear check?

Ear wax is usually harmless, and most of the time your ears look after themselves. Sometimes though it builds up and starts to get in the way. Tap anything that sounds like you.

Questions people often ask

What is microsuction?

It's a gentle way of removing ear wax using a tiny suction tip, while Emma looks closely into your ear canal. No water is used, so it's dry and very controlled, and she can see exactly what she's doing the whole time.

Does it hurt?

Most people find it comfortable. It can be noisy, a bit like a small vacuum close to your ear, but only for a short while. Some people feel a little light-headed, a cool sensation or a tickle that makes them cough. These pass quickly, and we can stop whenever you need a break.

How long does an appointment take?

About 15 minutes (20 minutes in Whakatāne). If it's your first visit, please arrive 10 minutes early to fill in a short intake form.

How much does it cost?

Appointments are $60 in Gisborne and $75 in Whakatāne, Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa. You'll see the current price for each clinic when you book online.

Do I need to put oil in my ears first?

Not always, but softening hard wax with a few drops of olive oil for a few days beforehand can help. Please don't use drops if you've had a perforated eardrum, grommets or a recent ear infection. If you're not sure, give us a call before your appointment.

Is microsuction safe?

Microsuction is one of the gentlest and most controlled ways to remove ear wax. Like any procedure there are small risks, which very rarely include ringing in the ears, an outer ear infection, balance problems or a perforated eardrum. Emma will talk you through this first. You can read our terms and consent.

How is it different from ear syringing?

Syringing flushes the ear with water. Microsuction is dry, so it's often a better option for people who shouldn't get water in their ears, and Emma can see what she's removing as she goes.

How often should I have my ears cleaned?

It's different for everyone. Some people only need it once, others build up wax and come back every 6 to 12 months. If you wear hearing aids or earplugs you may need it more often. Emma can give you an idea after your first visit.

Should I use cotton buds?

It's best not to. Cotton buds tend to push wax further in and pack it down, which can make things worse. Your ears are mostly self-cleaning, so a wipe of the outer ear with a cloth is plenty.

I wear hearing aids. Can I still come?

Yes, and wax is one of the most common reasons hearing aids whistle or sound weak. Bring your hearing aids along to your appointment.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book online yourself, or call us on 027 610 2047.

Can you do home visits or after hours?

Yes. Home visits, weekends and after hours are available at an extra cost. Please call us to arrange a time.

What if my ears need more than wax removal?

Emma will explain what she's found and help you with the next step. She works closely with GPs, local health providers and Bay Audiology, so she can point you in the right direction.
